Many galleries are closed or working a regular, Monday through Friday, workweek, and openings are few and far between. It is, in other words, a time to seek out non-art entertainment, preferably of the air-conditioned variety. Like movies! Here are ARTINFO‘s five picks for summer art-related films.

Waste Land, directed by Lucy Walker, wastelandmovie.com

Brazilian art superstar Vik Muniz seems like kind of a jerk when this documentary begins, embodying that affluent artist-tourist who awkwardly documents poverty-stricken “pickers” (“catadores”) — scavengers of recyclable materials in the mountains of garbage at the world’s largest landfill, Jardim Gramacho in Rio de Janeiro — from a safe and boring distance. Over the course of the film, however, Muniz (along with the delightful director Lucy Walker) become intimately involved in the lives of their subjects. And as a quickly-redeemed Muniz helps the inspiring catadores construct monumental self-portraits using the discarded materials from which they make a living, Walker constructs a fascinating simultaneous portrait of the country and of Muniz himself. Slick gavel-pounder Simon de Pury makes a strange guest appearance, when he auctions off one of Muniz’s photographs of the sculptural garbage-portraits, the proceeds from the sale of which Muniz gave back to the community. The moment in which one of the pickers, a lively local activist flown out to London to see the sale of his portrait, begins to weep in the hallway of Phillips de Pury, knowing the effects the sale of just one photograph will have on the lives of everyone in his community, is a poignant reality check for those who believe that the world is enclosed in auction-house walls. — Emma Allen

Jean-Michel Basquiat: The Radiant Child, directed by Tamra Davis, jean-michelbasquiattheradiantchild.com

Director Tamra Davis’s feature film credits include the Adam Sandler-helmed masterpiece Billy Madison, the Chris Rock comedy CB4, and Britney Spears‘ oddly watchable Crossroads. Her latest film amounts to different fare, a documentary about the life of New York artist Jean-Michel Basquiat, whose brief, troubled career remains one of the most contentious, complicated, and uncomfortable art-world phenomena in the past few years. — Andrew Russeth

Exit Through the Gift Shop, directed by Banksy, banksyfilm.com

Even those who are dubious of the burgeoning street-art movement may find something to like in this unusual, hall-of-mirrors documentary directed by British artist Banksy. The crisply edited 87-minute film follows the exploits of an enigmatic Frenchman named Thierry Guetta, who sets out to make a film about Banksy, only to have the camera turned on him by the reclusive superstar. Banksy ends up spawning a monster: Mr. Brainwash, the banal nom de guerre that Guetta adopts after being inspired by the experience. — AR

Coco Chanel & Igor Stravinsky, directed by Jan Kounen, chanelstravinsky.com.au

By the end of the 20th century, Chanel and Stravinsky would be legends, brand names connoting excellence, but in its early decades they were young radicals only beginning to find success in their respective realms. Beginning with Chanel’s attendance of the 1913 riot-filled premiere of Stravinsky’s “Rite of Spring,” Kounen’s sultry biopic follows its title characters from their first meeting to their torrid love affair, which began after the designer generously offered the composer use of her country villa. — AR

Agora, directed by Alejandro Amenabar, agorathemovie.com

While not strictly art-related, this period piece, set in Roman Egypt as Christianity was spreading throughout the region, explores (as Roger Ebert put it) “the ancient war between science and superstition,” a topic that seems as relevant as ever. Written and directed by Chilean filmmaker Alejandro Amenabar, Agora chronicles the life of a Roman slave who falls for his master, the philosophy professor Hypatia of Alexandria. Complicating matters, the slave is leaning toward the ascendant Christianity, and Hypatia is an atheist. — AR

Did I mention the camping trip is taking place in Palin’s home state of Alaska? Mosquitoes are the stuff of legend in Alaska. Alaska doesn’t just have mosquitoes, it has monster mosquitoes. Thirty-five different kinds of mosquitoes. Creepers.

It gets progressively worse, oh yes it does.

On this camping trip the kids will have to do schoolwork. Talk about the worst summer vacation E-V-E-R.

Sarah Palin’s father, a retired science teacher, and her brother, a third-grade teacher, will give the kids a hands-on natural history lesson. Sarah herself will show Kate and the kids how to avoid bears. Bears! On the other hand, that’s probably a lot less scary than all the other topics Palin could choose to talk about. Like Congress.

I’ve camped. It’s somewhat fun, as long as you don’t mind the discomfort, inconvenience and lack of sleep. Going anywhere with kids requires so much stuff. I often joke that traveling to the amusement park or my mom’s house with my two kids for one day feels like I’m going camping. So I can’t even wrap my mind around the amount of duffel bags and gear required for an excursion with eight. I’m sure Jon is thanking his lucky stars right now. With all these elements at play, it will be hard to know which part of the experience will be worse than the rest, but we’ll just have to watch the show and find out.

So as you’re complaining about the four-hour road trip to visit Aunt Millicent in Dayton or the overpriced restaurants at the seashore this summer, just think about Sarah and Kate Plus Eight and I guarantee you will instantly begin to have much better time.

Now that the long-rumored Britney Spears episode of Glee has been confirmed for next season, creator Ryan Murphy spilled a few details at Comic Con Sunday.

“We haven’t started shooting yet,” Murphy said. “We start shooting our new second season on Wednesday. All I can say is that we’re doing six Britney songs.”

Appropriately, Brittany (Heather Morris) will be the focus of the exciting episode. Hopefully it involves her losing her mind and walking out dressed like this …

“I don’t want to say what we’re doing yet because it’s not airing until September,” she teased, “but we’re paying tribute to her in a fun and unexpected way.”

As for Matthew Morrison, who lambasted the idea of the Britney episode when it first leaked? He reportedly “refuses” to do Spears songs in the episode.

Will the pop singer herself make a cameo on the hit Fox show, which paid tribute to Lady Gaga and Madonna in wildly successful episodes last season?

Don’t expect any big Glee spoilers … yet.

“I can’t say,” Murphy said. “Isn’t that terrible? That will launch 1,000 stories!”

Horse racing is an awesome sport to watch and as today is the first day of racing at Del Mar, I asked Wing a little bit about how one can make safe bets in the world of sports and in general society. In the racing world, Wing is known for making smart calls that make money. And his blog, Wing Tips, carries his predictions on a variety of topics. To celebrate the beginning of Del Mar, I decided to ask Wing to make some calls about the most likely dust-ups, bust-ups, break-ups and knock-ups in Hollywood and sports in the coming year.

So, how do you approach betting?

You try to keep it as scientific as possible but inevitably, whether you’re talking about who will win a race or pennant or what might happen in general society, you find yourself, out of necessity, factoring in the intangibles — who trains that horse? Has he been hot lately? Have there been any changes involved with this team or that team that can get them out of a rut? You take the hard dope and you mix it in with human intangibles that can’t be quantified. The best case scenario is when your opinion doesn’t match conventional wisdom because that’s when you can make money.

So, what’s the difference between the hard dope and the human intangibles?

A lot of times, in sports we know the hard reasons but it’s harder to know the softer reasons. For example, [on Team X] “everybody’s contracts are expiring this year, therefore there is a now-or-never mentality among the team.” Those are things you don’t pick up from one source. It’s an accumulation of everything you read or see on TV and out of 100 things that you read or hear about, 98 will be useless. The other two will strike a chord and you file them away and you say, “Alright, if this scenario comes up, then [I] can use the info.”

So, what’s the best call you’ve made in general society?

This goes back aways but it was predicting that George Bush Sr. would become president . He became president in 1988 and I predicted that [would happen] in 1979 based on his background in the CIA. I was feeling pretty good about myself when Ronald Reagan made him his running mate, because then he had a smooth path. And I suppose it was political analysis, but it was largely a function of his background at the CIA and the political climate at the time. He was the head of the CIA, and for the political climate at the time, the public would put a lot of stock in someone with an intelligence background.

What about in sports?

In 2005 I picked the Chicago White Sox to win and around the same time I had Syracuse winning the NCAA tournament. But I have to admit that that was largely a function of me predicting that Carmelo Anthony would turn out to be a good college basketball player, which he did.

Would you say that being a horse racing fan helps you with judgments in outside life?

It really does because horse racing is something that is very susceptible to conventional wisdom. A horse wins a race successfully and therefore people think that it will happen gain. Whereas, from a more calculating standpoint, you know that three things went right and may never happen again.

A lot of times when I’m reading something and people make assertions, I will silently ask myself, “Is this true?” If you throw in “Is this true” at the end of every statement, [it helps you immensely].

And now… some predictions: which celebrity will get married next?

Cameron Diaz and Alex Rodriguez in Las Vegas during the baseball offseason. Diaz has already begun hanging out with the other Yankee wives.

Which celebrity will get engaged next?

Kate Gosselin. She has to line someone up to help take care of all those little ones.

Which celebrity will be pregnant next?

Salma Hayek — she seems like the type to have a big family

What celebrity will adopt a child from the third world next?

I’m not aware of a celebrity who hasn’t already adopted one…

Will Angelina and Brad have another baby?

Yes. Brad supposedly wants another, and usually the man takes longer to come around on this sort of thing.

Will Lindsay Lohan get any big roles after jail? Will she find romance?

Lohan is too physically attractive not to find romance, but she will need to put together a few consecutive years of solid behavior before any big roles come her way.

Who will have the biggest summer music hit?

Rihanna seems like the safest bet here. She has such a compelling combination of voice, looks and street cred.

Which characters from The Hills will have their own spinoff?

Kristin Cavallari is certainly a candidate, but the most likely one is Stephanie Pratt, if only for the prospect of brother Spencer coming along for the ride.

Will LeBron and the Miami Heat win the Champsionships next NBA season?

Barring a significant injury among the big three, yes they will. No other team, not even the Lakers, will be able to match up with them.

Who will be the next judge on American Idol?

My money is on Justin Timberlake.

Which character will get kicked off of this season of the Jersey Shore?

Without a doubt, it is Ronnie. It’s just a matter of time until his temper, fueled by alcohol, results in an incident that forces his banishment.

Will Kim Kardashian and Reggie Bush get back together?

No. Reggie won’t want his personal life played out on TV, and Kim will be unwilling to give that part of her celebrity up.

Who will The Bachelorette pick — Roberto or Chris?

Roberto because Ali thinks he’s hotter and this isn’t Mensa.

Who will be Joe Jonas’s next girlfriend?

Miranda Cosgrove because she’s a good girl and he stays close to Disney — Demi Lovato was getting too edgy for him.

Who will play Oprah in the biopic about her life?

Could it be anyone other than Jennifer Hudson?

Who will win the Breeders’ Cup?

There’s no reason the undefeated supermare Zenyatta can’t win the weekend’s biggest race, the Breeders’ Cup Classic, just like last year.

Will Britney Spears marry her boyfriend?

Yes — it will end her father’s conservatorship once and for all.

Will Jennifer Aniston get married or have a kid?

A kid? Maybe. Married? No. Once bitten, twice shy.

Will Conan win an Emmy?

For sentimental reasons, yes he will.

Will Kristin Stewart and Robert Pattinson become a couple?

Yes — the conventional wisdom is that they already are one, the official confirmation would likely come after photos come out that confirm the relationship.

Will Larry King stay with his wife?

His track record screams “No!”

The term “hot mess” was coined with Britney Spears in mind.

Okay, that’s a lie, but it might as well be true. Just look at this girl! Exceeding her own lofty fashion standards, Brit went to Crate & Barrel in Sherman Oaks, Calif., yesterday and man. She’s having some major extension woes these days.

You’d think with approximately $700,000 a month in earnings, one could pull herself together a little more. Then again, at least she’s not going crazy … we think. Plus, she wore a bra for once, so it wasn’t all bad on the style front. Small victories!

1. Commercial Appeal
Multi-talented, charismatic and chatty singer-songwriter Ingrid Michaelson made the most of her 40-minute appearance on the main stage. Wearing a polka-dotted red top and short black skirt, she played ukulele and piano, and referenced Vanilla Ice and The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air during a bouncy rap heading into her signature hit “The Way I Am,” saying, “You play something 800 times, you have to change it up.” She also covered Britney Spears‘ “Toxic,” busting a few choreographed moves with her band that included female guitarists Allie Moss and Bess Rogers. Known for supplying catchy soundtracks for Grey’s Anatomy and in Old Navy commercials, the New Yorker doesn’t lack in confidence: “My live shows are a big thing,” she said during a pre-show press conference. “I have, like, a chip on my shoulder. I’m not just a girl that helps make a sweater look good on a beautiful supermodel. I also can play with the best of them.”

2. Shel of a Good Time
Four sisters from Fort Collins, Colorado collectively known as Shel — Sarah, Hannah, Eva and Liza Holbrook — got to perform in their home state after the Lilith stop in Austin, Texas, where they were scheduled to play, was canceled. They seemed the happiest to be here, posing for pictures with fans in the stands, dancing in the aisles off Section 102 while Emmylou Harris covered Bill Monroe’s “Get Up John” and executing well-rehearsed moves at the back of the stage during the all-but-the-kitchen sink finale on the main stage. Their enthusiasm alone should take them a long way.

3. And Now a Word From Our Network
ABC television is one of Lilith’s sponsors, but that should be no reason to force a crowd waiting for Emmylou to “watch” one of its new prime-time comedies, Better With You, annoying laugh track included. Considering it was still light outside at 8 p.m. and the image on the video screens on both sides of the stage couldn’t be seen, they might as well have been playing The Invisible Man.

4. Yo, Canada
Cameron Diaz-lookalike and daring, darling Metric frontwoman Emily Haines was a whirling (and alluring) dervish onstage, providing a burst of energy with springy dance moves, punk sensibilities, indie cred and those silvery hot pants during a captivating 40-minute set. Hailing from Toronto, along with husband and lead guitarist Jimmy Shaw, she acknowledged the fan waving a Canadian flag and presented “an ode to another amazing Canadian musician — that’s Neil Young,” urging the crowd to “Feel the Neil.” After borrowing a few lines from Young’s “My My, Hey Hey,” Haines and her three hard-rocking bandmates tore into “Gimme Sympathy” from Fantasies, which asks the musical question, “Who would you rather be – the Beatles or the Rolling Stones?”

5. Out of the Mouths of Babes
Sarah McLachlan, a divorced mother of two, realizes she takes a back seat to more “age-appropriate” performers when it comes to her kids. “They’re sick to death of the new album,” she said of Laws of Illusion, her first studio release in seven years that dropped June 15. With 8- and 3-year-old daughters, she’s resigned to the fact that they prefer Lady Gaga and Miley Cyrus.

6. No Social (Networking) Butterfly
Don’t expect to find Emmylou Harris (above left with McLachlan) on social media sites such as Facebook anytime soon. I don’t even know how to pull up YouTube,” she admitted. “Somebody did make me look at a wonderful thing called Attila Kitty. That’s as far as I’ve gotten. It’s actually called Attila Fluff, sorry.”

7. Letter Imperfect
You can’t tell the players without a scorecard, and it was frustrating that the Lilith website kept any would-be ticket buyers in the dark by failing to provide its concert itinerary on the day of the show. When it was finally revealed at the amphitheatre box office, Erin McCarley‘s name was misspelled ERIN “MCCLAREY.” And speaking of letters, the neon Lilith sign prominently displayed above the stage wasn’t shining part of the capital “L” and the first “i,” likely sending curious concertgoers to track down Pat Sajak in their quest to buy a vowel.

8. Heat of the Moment
The 98 degree temperatures and the mile-high altitude, or a combination of both, seemed to take their toll on Harris, whose divine but delicate vocals had trouble competing with a few thoughtless and inattentive spectators. She nonetheless persevered through a 40-minute, 10-song set of standards from her 40-year career that included “Here I Am,” “Orphan Girl,” “O Evangeline,” “Born to Run,” “Michelangelo” and “Going Back to Harlan.” But in performing Kate McGarrigle‘s “Talk to Me of Mendocino,” her heartfelt tribute to the Canadian folk-singing sister (and mother of Martha and Rufus Wainwright) who passed away in January after a “valiant three-year fight with cancer,” she brought a touching authenticity to the proceedings. By the time Harris and two talented members of her Red Dirt Boys backing band — Phil Madeira and Rickie Simpkins — wrapped up a lovely a cappella version of “Bright Morning Stars,” she had everyone’s undivided attention.

9. Sarah Smiles
It’s been a rough couple of weeks (months?) for McLachlan, but it didn’t show when she hit the stage a few minutes ahead of her scheduled 9:30 start. Mixing old (starting on grand piano for the incredibly harmonious “Angel” duet with Harris, “Building a Mystery,” “Adia,” “Sweet Surrender”) with new (“Loving You Is Easy,” “Forgiveness” and “Illusions of Bliss”), she smiled continuously while flashing those big, beautiful, brown eyes. Apparently taking Harris’ advice to heart, McLachlan stuck to wearing basic black, from a frilly smock to some badass motorcycle boots. She seemed more relaxed than ever on stage, bumping and grinding with backup singers Melissa McClelland and Butterfly Boucher and interacting with guitarists Luke Doucet (McClelland’s husband) and Peter Stroud. Drummer Matt Chamberlain and keyboardist Vincent Jones rounded out a band that rocked harder than many of her previous configurations. “This is where I feel so happy and so complete. I love singing and I love singing for you,” she said, before closing her 12-song, 50-minute set with “Possession,” the glorious breakout hit from 1993′s Fumbling Towards Ecstacy, and the whimsical “Ice Cream.”

10. The “Night” Belongs to Us
The rousing encore of Patti Smith‘s “Because the Night” included most of the day’s performers, although Metric was conspicuous by their absence. Michaelson (between Bess Rogers, left, and McLachlan), Harris and a soulful Boucher, an impressive performer who (deservedly so) gets her own spot on the tour in late July, took turns singing lead. McLachlan whirled and twirled as the head cheerleader of a fist-pumping group that also included Shel in the back, Liz Clark, Rosie Thomas and members of Michaelson’s band on her right, and McCarley and Anjulie on her left. It was more than enough to make smitten sweethearts say, “Let’s do it again, but consider a more intimate, less extravagant setting (that doesn’t charge 8 bucks a beer).”

Jessica Simpson touched down at LAX from Munich last night and was seen with Eric Johnson, her new boyfriend and former San Francisco 49ers tight end.

The singer is seen wearing a maxi safari print dress and a denim jacket, with several Louis Vuitton bags and roller suitcase … and looking far from pleased.

Come to think of it, they both do. Probably just because they got off a flight from Germany and were greeted by celebrity gossip media, but you wonder.

Simpson, who just turned 30 over this past weekend, has been canoodling with the Yale graduate and former football star for the past couple of months.

The fact that she’s dating a married man (he’s separated from his wife) hasn’t seemed to faze her, as Jessica herself is divorced and they seem happy.

Mostly.

Here’s hoping we see these two out in public more when they’re not doing their best impression of Britney Spears and Jason Trawick. Smile, guys!
