I'd preferring starting with a clay than sand... sand drains very easily and has almost no nutrients, where as clay is full of nutrients. Sand requires LOTS AND LOTS of organic matter to help it retain moisture and nutrients, and clay can be easily amended with lime and compost, and then a nice layer of mulch..

very good point about soil types. Huge difference between sandy loam and clay loam.
