@knightdrummer94 Contrary to popular belief, the Marines are NOT an SOF (Special Operations Unit) nor are they necessarily the ones always first on the front lines. The primary land warfare branch of the US Military is the Army. The Marines are, technically, a branch of the Navy. The Marines are no more elite than the Army and serve an entirely different purpose. Quantity versus quality does not play a role here as you can see. Again, simply a difference of mission statement/goals.

@knightdrummer94 According to the attrition rates, the US Army is harder to get into. In 2006, the US Army has a 13.6% attrition rate versus the Marines who had an attrition rate of 11.7%. This information is indicative that the US Army is more competitive and difficult. Furthermore, the reason for the Marines small numbers id because of their role, not due to selectivity. The Marines job is to be an expeditionary force for the Navy, not to fight for extended periods of time on the ground.
