so much emotion and power i give her props for singing this during the time where whites hate blacks it gives me chills how good she does it such a scary song about rascisim i love billie holliday even though im 14 this is raw natural talent to me

@Arsenogenics The comment I replied to said "The disgusting hate of racisim can't be put into words- but Billie did it" which implies she wrote it. I'm simply stating she didn't write it, but she sung it wonderfully and against prevailing sentiment at the time. Credit where credit is due. Not a problem with you is it?

@Arsenogenics I don't believe I ever commented on the relevance or otherwise of this song.
Arsenogenics (November 30, 1999 at 12:00 am)
@fenderkid6 Not much of a point there fender. Writing wasn't her job. The delivery is outstanding. Point made and the fact that we're still talking about it makes it relevant.

@MrLawman48 It may not be " Apparent" but it is "obvious". I am familiar with her performances & I think Ive seen enough to notice the difference.
MrLawman48 (November 30, 1999 at 12:00 am)
@monicarwells2 That's not "apparently obvious" at all.

Abel Meeropol wrote the song c. 1939, and took it personally to Billie Holiday.

@napoleonlouisxiv I mean no disrespect to Billie but she did not write the lyrics, if that's what you mean. The song was originally a poem by a Jewish teacher who witnessed the lynching of black men and the poem was then adapted into a song.
