"Science and the taboo of psi" with Dean Radin

Google Tech Talks January, 16 2008 ABSTRACT Do telepathy, clairvoyance and other "psi" abilities exist? The majority of the general population believes that they do, and yet fewer than one percent of mainstream academic institutions have any faculty known for their interest in these frequently reported experiences. Why is a topic of enduring and widespread interest met with such resounding silence in academia? The answer is not due to a lack of scientific evidence, or even to a lack of scientific interest, but rather involves a taboo. I will discuss the nature of this taboo, some of the empirical evidence and critical responses, and speculate on the implications. Speaker: Dean Radin Dean Radin is a researcher and author in the field of parapsychology. He is Senior Scientist at the Institute of Noetic Sciences and four-time former President of the Parapsychological Association. He holds an undergraduate degree in electrical engineering from the University of Massachusetts Amherst, and a masters degree in electrical engineering and a doctorate in educational psychology from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He has worked at AT&T Bell Labs and GTE Labs, mainly on human factors of advanced telecommunications products and services, and held appointments at Princeton University, Edinburgh University, University of Nevada, Las Vegas, SRI International, Interval Research Corporation, and Boundary Institute. At these facilities he was engaged in basic research on exceptional human capacities, principally psi phenomena.

@weduku "Anecdotal evidence bores me." ...luckily there was none in this lecture.

@deadmau5321 If all people were like you, we would have not invented even the wheel yet :D

If you are interested in psychic power and altered states of consciousness check out my channel. Open your third eye, further activate your pineal gland. Buy the ebook and keep it with you for regular referencing. Watch the video on my channel, then go to the Content Bazaar store and buy How To Open Your Third Eye for $4.99. 28 pages.

"and yet fewer than one percent of mainstream academic institutions have any faculty known for their interest in these frequently reported experiences." Well, even more people believe in various religions, and they HAVE faculties for studying it. Even with academics institutions studying it, they STILL cannot prove or document anything. Alien abductions are also "frequently reported experiences". Do you want academic institutions established to study that too? Anecdotal evidence bores me.

@deadmau5321 "HAHA! Your a idiot!!!" Idiot? Really? That's all you have to tell me instead of backing yourself up via evidence? How idiotic of you.... "1,008 hits from 3,145 is not evidence of psychic or telepathy whatsoever" Are you serious? 1,008 hits from 3,145 ganzfeld is not evidence of telepathy? My god just how stupid can these pseudo-skeptics get? Wrong, it is evidence. Go guess 3,145 times with a 1/4 probability of hit without cheating and I promise you, you'll never get it.....

@IceAges14Aces HAHA! Your a idiot!!! 1,008 hits from 3,145 is not evidence of psychic or telepathy whatsoever..... Have a good day!

@deadmau5321 "Why do you believe in psychic phenomena?" I don't believe, I only accept things with "empirical evidence" accumulated with data-collection and always open to the possibility of falsification. The Ganzfeld, DMILS, etc. peer-reviewed studies are one of the reasons why I said parapsychological research warrants further research. "Psychic phenomena doesn't exist its a bunch of mystical mumbo-jumbo bullcrap.... " Pseudo-skepticism and dogmatism at its finest!

@deadmau5321 "How the hell did he got 29 million trillion to one with 3,145 sessions with 88 experiments and say its evidence of telepathy? Talk about pseudo-science and ignorance in mathematics..." The irony with this is that you're the one whose actually ignorant in scientific methodology/statistics. The actual probability of getting 1,008 hits from 3,145 ganzfeld sessions in a two-tailed t-test is P<0.000000001, which is extremely strong evidence in conventional, scientific criteria..
