I have 6l6's in my mesa and you can really tell how crunchier the el34's are, but still sound heavy. I might go with the kt77's or kt88's for something that sounds like both

Those guys has modded 800's. Then Metallica started using those Mesa Mark II c+ from MOP on.

Throw an OD in front of it and you will be good.
