@OnlyBlix I knew we'd get there in the end...
RationalThinker1859 (November 30, 1999 at 12:00 am)
@OnlyBlix Clearly, you won't take my word for it, so how about Stephen J Gould`s (foremost scientist of the 20thC) - "Evolution is a theory. It is also a fact. And facts and theories are different things, not rungs in a hierarchy of increasing certainty. Facts are the world's data. Theories are structures of ideas that explain and interpret facts."
So, you agree there is the fact of gravitation? You also agree there is the theory of gravitation?
I rest my case.

@RationalThinker1859 Sigh...I honestly don't even know what you are arguing over now. It's like you're asking trick questions without even knowing you are doing it. No, gravitational theory is not a fact. Take in mind that there is more than one gravitational theory, and they depend on what field you go into. The manner in which you ask your questions is wrong as well. If you really want to expand your knowledge on this topic then I suggest you seek out someone that

@OnlyBlix I don' t kow who Matt is, and whether you "went over" anything with him or not is irrelevant.
Again, I never called a theory a fact. So you can drop the patronising tone, and urges to seek out a high school teacher.
It is a simple concept, and you have fumbled it twice now.
Gravity is fact and theory (which are not the same thing), as it evolution.
Next, I can hear you saying 'ahh, but it's ONLY a theory...`
RationalThinker1859 (November 30, 1999 at 12:00 am)
@OnlyBlix Don't misrepresent me. I never said theories are facts. I never said they are the same thing.
I said, in science, natural phenomenon can be both fact and theory. Hence, I gave you the example of gravity, the simple fact of it, and gravitational theory, the wider body of knowledge that explains the motion of planets eg.
Again, do you deny that gravity is both fact and theory? Honestly people...!
OnlyBlix (November 30, 1999 at 12:00 am)
@RationalThinker1859 Gravity is a physical phenomenom that is all around us, and a theory is made to explain it. All theories help us with is to get closer and closer to how to answer the questions revolving around something, such as gravity. Even doing some simple research yourself, you can quickly find out that theories are never facts, but are supported by facts. Honestly people! Stay in school! ;D
OnlyBlix (November 30, 1999 at 12:00 am)
@RationalThinker1859 I'm not sure if you are being serious or not. As I went over with matt already, theories are not labeled as facts. It is a very simple concept to understand. I urge you to research the matter, or even discuss it with a high school teacher, or if you're in a university discuss the matter with a professor. They should more than adequately explain why you're wrong in calling a theory a fact.
RationalThinker1859 (November 30, 1999 at 12:00 am)
@OnlyBlix Noooooooooo!
RationalThinker1859 (November 30, 1999 at 12:00 am)
@OnlyBlix "I don't know of any professor that would back you up with your idea of what a theory is. It is backed up by evidence, not "facts."
Gee wizz. The reason you don`t know many professors who would do this is because you haven't spoken to many (I guess)
What are facts if they are not evidence? How can a fact not be evidence?
But do carry on, please...
RationalThinker1859 (November 30, 1999 at 12:00 am)
@OnlyBlix So in your world, gravitational theory is not actually fact? Gravity is not a fact?
Atomic theory is not factual - the behaviour of atoms is not fact? Cell theory is not fact either - the functions of cells is not known to be fact?
Know your definitions. Scientific theories are not the same as the guy in a bar having a theory.
Facts are cheap and plentiful. Theories bind facts together and have strong explanatory power.
Thus the facts and theory of gravity/evolution/cells etc |
