Holy crap, and here I was thinking it took until Aquarion to have an actually possible version of what Getter Robo did. This not only has that, but it's very very simplistic, unlike Aquarion which was probably rendered in the same way the Transformers movie was.

At least the monsters in the opening kind of look like Ishiwaka's 90s creatures. I mean even that last monster with lady bug shell and wings looks creepy.

The Manga is classic getter mindfuckery. The anime is a more lighhearted take on Getter Robo. You can't really compare them as they are far too different in terms of tone and plot.

@SMAXZO It's still pretty bad.

You know what bothers me? People bashing on the anime because it didn't follow the manga. Yes, the manga is better but try watching it on it's own merits, not based on the manga. I know a couple of animes that deviated from the manga yet still pretty good.

Nothing says Go Nagai like Ichiro Mizuki!

@Irrelevant402 Oh it is. And the premise is a good one, which is probably why Voltron Force ripped it off (with a much worse opening song). But yeah, the manga easily exceeds the anime in this case.

@Dynaman21 Now that I've read Getter Robo Go I see why the anime adaption is disliked. But I'm going to admit: this opening is pretty awesome.
Dynaman21 (November 30, 1999 at 12:00 am)
@Irrelevant402 The manga it's based on is very good, but this series dumbs down everything considerably and makes the plot and characterization a jumbled incoherent mess, so much so that they later released Shin Getter Robo vs. Neo Getter Robo as an apology. |
