Half Life 3 Speculation - Graphics

THIS IS WHAT I THINK WILL BE INCLUDED IN THE GRAPHICAL ENGINE. I DON'T KNOW FOR SURE. Sorry about the poor quality, this was released before the days of youtube HD and I never thought that youtube would actually do it. Amazing how things progress, huh? Shame the same can't be said about graphics technologies, which seem to have slowed down recently. I blame the current consoles and their hardware limitations. I feel that they will dictate the graphics in games from now on, pray for the Playstation 4 and Xbox big number soon! Although a lot of these technologies are playable in realtime already, I doubt we'll see them in games for a while because game designers tend to make games for the lowest common denominator. Once the slowest PCs out can support things, we'll see wider adoption of them. If you want to know how long that will be, try to follow the latest CPUs being released (Sandybridge and Bulldozer, from Intel and AMD respectively). These new CPUs manage to squeeze a graphics card on them as well. They're still slow, though it would help the entire WORLD if they decide to step up their game a bit. Stupid integrated graphics. And stupid Nvidia for keeping PhysX to themselves, instead of letting other companies use the code as well. Nvidia has messed up the potential for real time physics in games, unless somebody comes along and makes an open-source equivalent. I guess that Havok is the closest thing to this. I also have some speculation at the end about Half Life 3. But it's probably not right because it's just speculation! but it's fun just predicting things and seeing how they end up anyway. ##################### ##################################### ADDITIONAL STUFF THAT MIGHT BE INCLUDED PARALLAX MAPPING Parallax mapping is already pretty much obsolete thanks to tessellation support in dx11, I have no doubt that it will become used more and more as time goes on, especially if the next generation of consoles support it. Below is a pretty video showing tessellation, on the famous unigine 2.1 Heaven benchmark. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v... RAYTRACING Raytracing is the other biggie I missed out of this video. So far there are very few interesting examples of it in realtime. Personally I'm not too impressed by the reflection demos, I'm far more interested in the lighting potential it has. Nvidia has a nice car example (you can download it if you have an nvidia 400 or 500 series graphics card) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v... There's also a nice minecraft raytracing video that shows how much better the lighting will look if done with raytracing. There's still a large amount of noise when moving the camera about though, this will likely lessen as time goes on and processing becomes faster. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v... VOXELS It's like Delta Force, all over again! Imagine a world made up of lots and lots of small 'bits'. Like lego. This is a long way off being viable, but obviously simulating a world out of lots of small bits is beneficial. It's almost like the way that real life works! The only thing I know that could possibly support this so far is ID Tech 6, the next engine on from the one powering RAGE. If I've missed out anything big then please tell me. ######################### ################################# Scenes included in this video (in order)... FirefoXDMedia (November 30, 1999 at 12:00 am)
Too bad they won't make a new engine... Source is outdated already, no matter how many updates they will make.
