Maybe, with a tad more practice! Guitar Monsters indeed! I think they were either the first players or among the first to have guitars named after them. Where would country be without Chet or rock without Les? Thanks to Leo Fender and Les Paul, we have the best solid body electric guitars in the world!

I don't think Chet was "challenged" playing with Les at all. Their styles were totally different, but Chet could play with the best anywhere. He WAS Mr. Guitar, ya know! He labeled himself, CGP certified guitar player, and nobody EVER disputed it. Who the best guitarist ever was is always going to be open for debate, but when folks talk about great guitarists, Chet's name is always at or near the top. He never had to take a back seat to anyone.

Les Paul made a "solid body" conventional guitar in 1941. The Electro String Company produced their first solid body electric Hawaiian guitars in 1931. The only difference is that these didn't have frets. They were "steel guitars".
