I don't know how much that bike is worth but I reckon the bypassers prolly think you'd be halfway home before they dial 911 anyway... and they know that no cop is gonna bother with bicycle theft cuz by the time they get there that bike would already be on craigslist XD
It's very interesting to try this test when a cop is walking by or a patrol car. I'd like to see that.

In Amsterdam I saw a guy cutting a bike lock with huge cutters.
I asked him: "is that your bike?"
He replied "yes".
It's hard to pursue things beyond that stage.

first of all it's a shit bike no one cares, second people would assume you just lost your key and own the bike it's hard to prove otherwise.

you can never tell if its a thief or a guy who lost a key! of course by looking at his back pack you could tell though. you can easily spot thief tools

I will call the police on any grocery store or building that attempts to prevent me from taking my bike inside. i NEVER leave my bike outside. the NYPD is absolutely USELESS, and so are pedestrians. the law is NOT on your side. only yourself and fellow bikers. cyclists, look out for bike thieves, for your bike and fellow cyclists bikes. its time for REGISTERED INDOORS BIKE PARKING. get this idea to the city. must have an authorized "parking card" that you show to security, just like indoors car.
