It is strange to see a respectable middle class family being so negligent. It is funny that this is how they behave. I wonder what interests people like this. They seem apathetic to what most people find the most important. Whatever is going on, it is funny.

I bumped in to David Cann at Edinburgh Fringe a few years aback, in the bar at the Pleasance Courtyard. I asked him about this sketch and he said Julia Davis almost refused to film it as she found it so disturbing. She took quite a bit of coaxing to get it together.

@mytimetravellingdog That's not true, Chris Morris specifically requested that no ad breaks be incorporated into the show. Primarily because he didn't want the atmosphere ruined by screaming ads.

@mytimetravellingdog No it was funny at the start because their indifference to the boy not coming home from school was a joke in itself which pushes boundaries & isn't mainstream. To stretch the indifference to callousness kills the idea for me as it becomes like one of those exaggeration type jokes where you keep upping the ante by topping the previous exaggeration until it gets ridiculous & unfunny.

@coveneyr It is worth remembering that this nearly never got shown. Channel 4 gave Morris free reign and he came back to them with Jam I wonder if half of it was deliberately biting the hand that feeds him (he was very pissed off with CHannel 4 at some point putting that frame into brasseye that youtube would filter out) by making something utterly genius but with zero commercial appeal. Literally. when it was shown they could not get advertisers for it so showed in late at night with no ads

@flaxonx3 i disagree their callous indifference is the joke the part of it that makes it actually funny dealing with it 'simply' wouldnt have been funny and wouldnt fit in with the series which is demented boundaries pushing comedy genius. He isnt looking for something mainstream he is looking for something funny and clearly wants people who dont like the series to turn off I do think the Blue Jam radio version of this sketch which is a bit longer and has different music is superior though.
