Subtle detail and leaving something to the imagination are the keys to getting under my skin. I'm not big on gore or flashy visual effects unless they actually have a necessary place in the storyline. Anticipation, mind games, and fear of the unknown are a different story though. It's no surprise that The Shining is at the top of my list.
