In the 1800s cities used pneumatic tubes to transfer physical documents. Of course with the internet we no longer need these long tunnels, but that doesn't mean that they aren't fun to learn about how these old systems are similar to the internet. Molly Wright Steenson gave a great talk about how these systems worked and what was state of the art in the 1800's. Get Ignite in iTunes: http://bit.ly/ignite

Wow! What a great presentation. On point and informative and lacking the usual fat marble filler that you see in most speakers. Excellent!

the speaker is orgasmic at points

With the rising cost of gas - is there a real reason why we've not developed a trans-continental pneumatic tube? How kick-ass would that be? "Okay Jimmy. Grandma is only 20 minutes away, but we have to sedate you so you don't cause a pressure imbalance and destroy Chicago with a sneeze."

its a stupid and annoying feature they added, who gives a fuck about a stopwatch counting down.

I find myself staring at the countdown and not taking in what's being said.

excellent work!

I love the way the talk format is QUICK-QUICK-QUICK! but the video wastes a minute on a title card's worth of info :)

Great info, not sure how I feel about the lecture format. A speedy time-limit is fine and all, but having force-timed slides and the seconds count down super-imposed on the screen like that makes me nervous just watching. One would hope we're watching the video to learn something, not counting the seconds until it's over.

Larger department store have them to shuttle cash from the tills. So does this technology suck or blow?
