@UrbanEggLayer ask the farmers of India how well those GM seeds worked for their overpopulated, starving country. Farmers don't get what they deserve but GM food is not the way to go. America is not obese and disease infested for no reason.

@UrbanEggLayer Most GM crops aren't "food crops". Varieties of Bt corn are mostly used for ethanol, cattle feed, corn syrup, etc. Cotton and Canola varieties are mostly used for oils, Sugar beets for sugar, etc. Most GM crops are "food additive crops", they don't feed people anymore than table salt feeds people. Most GM crops INCREASE starvation in poor countries by wasting land, patents, government subsidies, etc. We produce more than enough food to feed the world without GM.

Well said, the problem that comes to my mind is, how are we going to feed a world population that is growing faster than we can feed it. GMO's produces more food even though it could be bad for you. It's a hard decision. Plus farmers don't get nearly what they deserve for basically keeping the world from starving.. Especially for farmers that grow non GMO crops. Its greed at its finest

@AcanLord Conventionally bred crops generally take 5-12 years to bring to the market, not thousands of years like you believe, by using gene mapping, etc. that time frame is constantly decreasing. In the huge majority of cases there is no immediate need for a crop and the few years difference is insignificant, especially considering the additional risks GM crops generaly pose. GM crops sell for less and can't be sold as organic so they won't help reduce poverty in poor countries.

@myndy86 tldr.
stop spamming the comments section.
Try to summerize want you want to say in one message rather then flooding
the comments.
i`m well aware there are regular disease resistant crops.
You are missing the point.
and the point is the red queen.
and the fact of the matter is that it takes less time to produce a disease, or drought
resistant product then to use hybridization or selective breeding.
in anycase, i don`t rightly care about the arguement.

@AcanLord There are already numerous conventionally bred crops that are disease resistant(Wheat streak mosaic virus resistant wheat, Late blight resistant potato, Cassava Mosaic Disease resistant cassava, etc.) as well as numerous conventionally bred dought resistant crops(Nerica rice, Drought tolerant maize, Drought tolerant pigeon peas, etc.). Not only that, but most studies suggest organic farming has higher yields in drought prone parts of Africa as well.

@TheAntiV like i said to the other GMO backer, your opinion has little impact. ive read many an article/study from both sides of this argument. i could get drawn into a debate until the end of time but i see myndy86 has already taken you to the cleaners. look, its not a knee jerk reaction. but yes its a reaction to monsanto and the like. they are dangerous, careless companies and i dont want their dangerous food. thats all there is to it. GMOs wont get my vote. theres better safer solutions. |
