The last few years of his life my grandfather let us know his love for this song. It became "that" song that many of us have for a loved relative. He wasn't a perfect man by any means, but this song means so much and can make any of us cry anytime we hear this song.

I love this song.
I've put a song on youtube from his early recordings in Toronto in 1977.
Type in '35th anniversary blizzard 77'.
I wonder if he recalls this session in Paul's studio.

@hectorhamish i was 25 when my father passed and the same as yourself i came across this song and the tears still flow. unlike you my fathers last name was mcdermott and when i see john singing this he is my fathers double. your father would be proud of you no matter what because thats what fathers do. the tears will never all be shed

I first met John in 1978 when he recorded 2 of my songs. Knew he had talent
& class back then. This song proves it all.
