Stanford Professor Robert Sapolsky, posits that depression is the most damaging disease that you can experience. Right now it is the number four cause of disability in the US and it is becoming more common. Sapolsky states that depression is as real of a biological disease as is diabetes. @YouIsAnHero you would be sweating too if you just talked for one hour straight about something serious like this.

Nothing has to trigger the depression. It could just happen.

@Neurolanis - If you are aiming to add satire to this discussion, you have succeeded. He has laid out the depression disease framework very clearly and here are his credentials from wiki: "He is currently Professor of Biological Sciences, and Professor of Neurology and Neurological Sciences and, by courtesy, Neurosurgery, at Stanford University"

The emotions affect the body. Depression is emotional and its effects are intellectual, emotional, spiritual and physical. It is not a disease and is not biology. It is *emotional*.

@cyrus1366 I immediately thought of myself. But then, as a child I was nicknamed Batman... So in a way, I guess I did think of Batman ^_^

@RoCk4LiFe90 If you can sleep a normal amount of time (7-8 hours) but have trouble sleeping at a socially acceptable time of day, you may have delayed sleep phase disorder, which is a misalignment of the circadian rhythms (somewhat like being jet-lagged in your own time zone). DSPD is often found together with depression, for reasons that are poorly understood. My guess is that being (literally) out of phase with society is inherently lonely and alienating.

With all the corruption in this world I still have sad thoughts about the world and a dark.outlook but ive built up a defense to depression out of thought process trial and error so now I have both ends of the spectrum.
