When I was 4 years old I was pulled through an open car window by the hand by a black bear in Yellowstone park. When my father jumped out the bear dropped me and ran. I was driven 50 miles for emergency surgery with no anesthetic for a nearly severed thumb. It took several years before my hand worked normally. I have backpacked in bear country as an adult, but now always take my two Kuvasz livestock guardian dogs when in the bush to deter any wildlife attacks.

There seems to be a general misconception that if you have your car windows rolled up it means you're safe. A bear can smash through a glass window in a couple of seconds. I've seen them do it and if it's a small black bear they can jump in through the broken window a second or two later. Plate glass car windows don't stop bears for very long and some have become experts at smashing windows, jumping inside cars for food, then leaving through the same window. Some even open car doors.
