this song is all urgency and slow-burning panic: the lost intensity of early-20s friendships dissipated by jobs spouses and kids; the lost promise of a fabled carefree youth that looks beautiful only from afar; it feels like you've lost the person you imagined you'd be and wasted the person you were; and it feels like—and this is where the moral kicks in, the hope, and maybe the drugs—you still have time to make it up, accept, reverse course or whatever you need to do to become what you are

Best take of this song ever in my mind. piano rendition is beautiful and the harmonica compliments it perfectly. Add the raspy voice of springsteen and you have one hell of a song.

@ghostoftomjoad1 I've listened to this song how many thousands of times over the last 36 years (omg!), but I'm sitting here with tears in my eyes as if it were the first time I heard it.

This is the most romantic song I've ever heard. Who else could take a line like "you ain't a beauty but hey, you're alright" and make girls swoon?! |
