How would his fate have been determined had he committed to use that money to help save the lives of others? For example, he could have invested that money in food aid and agricultural development in parts of the world where people are starving. Is it morally acceptable to take one life if you could potentially save thousands of others?

Yep, if he simply presented the options without coercion either way it may have been different but the British guy was actively coercing the dude into pressing it. I know this is supposed to be an exhibition of the "war of the soul" but like you say it is just statistically consistent
