@Zachry86 Heli-logging allows access to high-quality,high-value old growth timber on otherwise unreachable slopes. As more accessible old-growth timber is exhausted, this less accessible wood becomes so valuable that a well-run heli-logging operation is much more than just break-even. You probably noticed the emphasis on co-ordination in the video - this safely enables the speed required to heli-log profitabley.

I wrote the script for this video as a contractor for Worksafe. Very gratifying to see how many people it has helped

heli logging is not efficient...

@Zachry86 its faster, the helos dont have to navigate the bumpy hills, they lift a vast quantity of load and take it directly to the landing site. Hook up to the logs lift them off the hill, get to an altittude above the over trees and take it 'As the crow flies' directly to the landing. If you were to count the number of logs that hand been done in a day, loader agains helo, you'd see a vast difference!!!

I really like this video in that its message is very clear, rules to work by must be adhered to! But as Zachry86 said, it would make more sense to maintain Forested areas and log by train. I really do not understand how logging using a sky lift can make any money? Surely it is just for 'convenience.? Helicopter logging introduces a substantially higher risk factor of, not just getting hurt, but killed! This surely cannot be a job for a Family man? Just too risky! Good luck for 2011 mrbluenun

@Zachry86 they are fast moving and can go to very specific places to get specific types of wood

@sweetypie000 kinda funny did you know there are more trees growing in north America than there was in the 60s... also if you don't support this... stop using paper, stop receiving bills, build a house out of mud... infact just slit your wrist now and finish yourself...

@scotty1045: get your facts straight. don't get me wrong, i'm not a treehugger, i'm not anti-logging, i'm not anti-progress. but to think that a replanted forest is the same as an old growth forest is... well, stupid. of course there is a disruption to the wildlife in the area. of course, logging the wrong area at the wrong time could make a species go extinct. of course logging leaves a mark on the area that will not go away for a very very long time (300 yrs? or so) but it's worth it, imo
