When the electricity goes out, the phone line gets its power from a back up battery supply that only last up to 8 hrs. We learned this when we had a power outage for 2 days. We called the power company from our NON CORDLESS land line when it happened, Later we tried to call again and no dial tone. When the power was restored I called the phone company to see what was up, and they told me about the backup battery supply.
