Tesla CD Turbine Pencil Sharpener

This may be the world's simplest turbine! ...and possibly the fastest cranking pencil sharpener! Mrfixitrick does the impossible, using the power of magnets to make a working Tesla Turbine from 2 CD's, 4 magnets, and a CD jewel-case. A classic pencil sharpener is powered to over 2000 rpm with it! The Tesla turbine works by the principle of boundary layer adhesion of fluid to the discs. From the nozzle, the fluid spirals inward through the discs, then out the centre exhaust port. The fluid imparts its energy to the discs, and normally a shaft, as it does so. This revolutionary magnetic turbine uses the original Tesla disc turbine idea, but eliminates the shaft, bearings, and seals! There is only one moving part...a rotor consisting of four magnets sandwiched between two clear CD discs. The magnetic rotor of the jewel-case turbine couples magnetically with the magnetic flywheel attached to the pencil sharpener. There is no direct mechanical connection. Since the turbine itself is capable of over 8000 rpm before destruction, mrfixitrick also shows torture testing of a new clear polycarbonate cover that ensures safe testing. @MuF123 There are two systems that come to mind. One would be a high-speed Tesla Turbine burning gases produced from a plasma furnace type system. The high temperature, velocity and shear effects break down and combust any residual particulate matter inside the turbine, leaving quite a clean exhaust. A better way is a thorium reactor that has no radioactive byproducts. They are being developed and are a viable no pollution, safe energy source. It could produce heat to drive a Tesla Turbine.

what fuel can be used and produce "no pollution"?

@omegaguy6 Soon, real soon. I'm working on several at once.

When's your next video

@shrimpinpat Using air pressure is a fun way to demonstrate the basics of the Tesla Turbine, a 100-year-old design that Nikola Tesla said was "the greatest of all my inventions". Tesla had over 600 patents. The Tesla Turbine can be run on any fuel (gas, diesel, propane, alcohol, natural gas, biofuels, sour gas, etc.) or pressure source (compressed air, steam, water pressure), and is the only type of engine to be able to do so. It has even run on direct combustion of oats!

Whats the point if it has to be connected to an air supply? I could use an outlet? if this used some sort of interesting powersource that didnt need to be made by another machine.

@imshanedulong The torque of a Tesla Turbine is dependant on the nozzle velocity and volume of fluid, and the diameter and spacing of the discs. Most Tesla turbines have relatively low torque, but they make up for it in high RPM. Therefore, the total horsepower could be very high for the size and weight of the Tesla turbine. Tesla claimed he got between 5 and 10 horsepower per pound of engine weight!

How much tork would a Tesla Turbine have? I can't imagine it would have much though it's still an amazing invention.

Totally rad ... this is got to be the coolest pencil sharpener in the whole wide universe !!! .... best for 2012 from 2 HB
