(Viewers are advised to use the 'watch in high quality' option for this video). 'Snow' is available to buy as part of the BFI DVD 'Geoffrey Jones: The Rhythm of Film' - http://filmstore.bfi.org.uk/ac... Comprising train and track footage quickly shot just before a heavy winter's snowfall was melting, the award-winning classic that emerged from the cutting-room compresses British Rail's dedication to blizzard-battling into a thrilling eight-minute montage cut to music. Tough-as-boots workers struggling to keep the line clear are counterpointed with passengers' buffet-car comforts. In a mere half-dozen films released between 1959 and 1975, director Geoffrey Jones revealed himself as an outstanding talent, embracing industrial filmmaking as consistent with a personal style, blending movement and sound into a joyous, rhythmic whole. Brilliantly aided by Wolfgang Suschitzky's shimmering camerawork, the Oscar-nominated 'Snow' is Jones' masterpiece. It's crisply invigorating enough to induce brief amnesia about our trains' notorious inability to cope with the white stuff - then and now. @HQBProductions My thoughts exactly, I was surprised to see workers shovelling snow off the tracks, nowadays a man in a high visibility jacket would just cancel all trains in light rain. I do wish I was around during that era.

How could anyone dislike this!

Well the film clips could have been fascinating but the whole thing is ruined by that truly terrible "music" which completely ruins the whole thing. Add in the dreadful and completely unnecessary editing and you get something that has wonderful content but which becomes unbearable to watch. Such a shame..I was there in 1963 and have clear memories. It was not "feared", no panic from the media. People were far more resourceful and used common sense rather than hearing lawyer driven "advice".

I came here because you tube suggested it... after watching a clip called ' In car camera London to Bath' - a car journey filmed from the inside of a Jaguar car in 1963, heavily edited of course as the film is only about 9 minutes long. Fascinating step back in time to a different age. As I say that brought me to this fascinating clip!

Very good, I love snow, and i love train journeys, This video reminded me of a train journey i had in Ameria, it contrasted the comfort of the passengers and their comfort, with the hard work of the working men.Does anyone agree?

That must have been an Arctic oscillation year. My memory is how it started on Boxing day 1962 and did not let up until end of March, beginning April. Walking to school in winkle-pickers and italian nylon socks. Frozen pipes, making money after school pushing cars up a small hill outside home and a school journey to Austria to learn downhill skiing. The trains were already converting to diesel, as was shown in film. The film was interesting but could have done without first class, chowing down?
