the exhaust is to release excess steam in the boiler and also to help the engine accelerate
the cylinders do not contain water, they contain water vapor known as steam. it drives the engine, and the boiler contains lots of steam
as of currently no. steam locomotives are not environmentally friendly but they are a piece of history
the side rods can put out more pounds of force then you can imagine, also the locomotive is so heavy, technically yes.

Steam engines became so efficient just as diesel was introduced. A political thing.
Same for cars and everything in life. Bar fridge size electrical generators that can be powered by rubbish are available.
