Indeed, your comment on type metal is correct...back in junior high metal shop in our foundry segment, we used sand molds for that stuff!

My dad 'candled' his Gilbert molds before pouring LEAD into them, after clamping. Would love to see a video of the old time toy soldier factories of the 1930's DIY sets...

The casting pot cost me about 65 bucks new, the pewter I get at scrap value, and the molds appear often on ebay usually for between $8.00 and $20.00.
