M is already a partial derivative of Ψ respect to X and N is already a partial derivative of N respect Y, then if it's an exact equation the partial derivative of M and N are equal.
When you takes those partial derivatives you'll know if it's exact or no and if you can solve it using this method.
He talk about it in the Intuition 2 vid.

question. why did you do partial differentiation of the M function with respect to y when in the formula you showed it was partial with respect to x plus partial with respect to y dy/dx?
